In a party that min/maxes, you’re hoping that your comrades will fill in the spaces you’ve decided to min. If the party gets separated for any reason, insert Kool Aid Dick™ in fan. Yuck.

You guys discussed interpreting magic cards that you pass out and exchange during character creation.

Have you considered using Tarot cards to do the same thing? I’ve used them as an aid for character (and as a GM for NPC) generation. Tarot cards are meant to tell you about people, and you can read a slew of things into them. For a background, just deal out three or four cards and make up a story that involves each card as an episode in your life, or a person in it.

Really, humans have a huge capacity for pareidolia (or apophenia), the tendency to see patterns where none exist. Basically you just need a source of “noise” that you can aim your faulty pattern-recognition software at, and have fun with the results.

Also, reputation++ for mentioning SotC, Luke.

That’s not such a bad idea. I even have a tarot deck.
