March 30th, 2012 · David · 6 Comments

Welcome back to Feedback Fridays! Last week, we got some good responses. Let’s keep it up!

This week’s question:

What is your favorite TYPE of show and why? What’s your least favorite and why?

Examples would be: Regular Episodes, Campaign Recaps, Interviews, or something else!

I enjoy the campaign recaps the most. The insight provided into the game that you are playing are damn useful. It helps me when I am looking to pick up a new game to try as well as showing me something I might not have heard of at all. Hell, I picked up Burning Empire entirely due to your campaign recap. Money well spent.

Interesting, since my playerd torpedoed that game…

The ones where you pick a topic and stick to it.

The ones where you pick a topic and don’t stick to it.

I sort of hate to admit that my favorite episodes were the KTNG recaps, because they were just bonus episodes, and I also don’t want to ruin your game night by telling you that you need to turn your games into performance art for the podcast. I suspect the reason why everyone was so fond of KTNG though is disappointingly vague. A good gaming story simply has much in common with any other good story, and I’m not going to waste your time lecturing you about what makes a good story.

Ironically while I enjoyed your campaign recaps the most, the episodes I liked the least were the two Actual Plays. I’ve been trying to figure out why that was for a long time, since I really enjoy the Penny Arcade 4e podcasts, and I finally have a theory that explains the disparity. Most Actual Plays are released with poor audio quality accompanied by the sounds of mummered rules, strategies, and the crinkling of bags of chips in the background. The PA 4e podcasts were always more like four guys doing a co-op Lets Play with the all the unfocused banter associated, only instead of a video game they were doing it with 4e.

I’m not saying, ‘ugh, releasing your Skype Burning Wheel game as an actual play is a horrible idea,’ but you may want to consider doing campaign recaps for it instead. I mean you will already have everyone on Skype so~

I think after Actual Plays I dislike interviews the most. That’s not because there’s anything specifically wrong with the interview episodes, and I do appreciate David putting effort into improving his interview skills, but sometimes the elevator pitch for a product just does not snag me, and then I just don’t care about the interviewee or their opinions for the rest of the show. This is just a preference on my end, but I felt it was worth mentioning since Interviews were specifically listed in your post.

Interviews are interesting, but regular episodes are my favorite. I especially enjoy when there are differing opinions and there is much arguing; actually I enjoy it even more when some of you share the same opinion and think the other person is wrong anyway because he uses different terminology or examples. Fantastic!
