I like you guys, and with the exception of that painful song at the end of each episode, I like your podcast.

However you apparently don't understand the difference between criticism and flaming. While you are right, there is no call to sat "THIS GAME SUCKS" without substantiating the opinion, it is actually possible to critique design choices.

It's also possible to talk about the flaws of a game without having them become personal attacks on the designer - if you can trust the designer to be mature enough to know the difference.

If the designer isn't mature enough to know the difference, then the game is probably going to suck anyway and you really should warn your listeners.

In all it sounded like you were just making up excuses for not doing reviews when all you really needed to say was "Doing reviews is hard. It takes a long time and does not entertain us, if we had to do reviews every show the show would never get out."

Don't make excuses, just keep being entertaining.

On the whole on-topic vs. banter issue for podcast style, I have to point out that while you guys make banter work, there are other RPG podcasts where it's become a suffocating mire of chirpy, uninteresting bullshit. When folks in that thread advised Jarvis to keep his show on topic, I don't think the Podge Cast was really the example we were worrying about.

@Josh I think you missed Luke's list of caveats on the statement which covers half of your critiques. I knew your numbers at Gencon and I doubt with a barren release schedule since then, I'd be very surprised if they grew substantially.

And, I would argue in a discussion of "Most Popular" it is very much a downloads competition.

No complaints on the actual criticism discussion at the table?

@Clyde Your estimates are good, but a little off. I'd be glad to talk about it with you offline, if you want.

We can talk about the Iron Tyrants stuff if you're still interested when Luke gets off his ass and finishes it. :)

Ha. I knew you were joking... at least somewhat joking, nothing wrong with being proud of hard work.

I'm good at criticizing, usually including things like page numbers, logic analysis, blah, blah. I'm serious though, and am not offering a small thing, it's a lot of work for me to do a proper criticizing. *shrugs* You have my email.

I doubt that the Podgecast or Brilliant Gameologists are in the top ten downloaded gaming podcasts. And I know for a fact that neither is in the top 5.

Remember that AP and interview shows yield a much larger audience. And the corporate podcasts have big audiences. And people who play minis, magic and video games swell the numbers of combination podcasts.

Thankfully, it is not a downloads competition. (And I have no idea what our numbers are currently.)

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to call my blatant super-arrogance. I get a bit excited and am prone to hyperbole. While I'm extremely happy with the game I've designed, I'm sure there will be stuff even I'd like to change as I get more and more experience with game design.

To quote Sir Jarlsburg "Oh, forgive me, forgive me. Usually I'm not such a hideous bragart!"

I figure max audience is around 10k, at most 15k right now. Most people seem to listen to many RPG podcasts if they listen at all. My guess is you guys are at around 1500 to 2k a show, with occasional spikes. My guess would be similar for Fear the Boot, and Brilliant Gameollogists. I have no idea about the more business oriented guys like Pulp Gamer, or Ed Healy, as I never rub elbows with them. I'd be curious though. Am I far off? I'm mainly estimating to guessing.

I never heard about this survey till this morning, I'd love to help next time. Did you announce it on the show? I must have been particularly brain-dead then.

Is there a computer transferable version of Iron Tyrants? I feel like someone dropped a criticism gauntlet, and I'd like to pick it up. I'll show you criticism!

David where is this survey data at? I'm not involved with the whole yahoo RPG podcaster kumbaya.

Also my penis is around 500 an episode, it's kind of small, but it's got a good form. I find it amusing people are afraid to discuss numbers.

Oh, man, with so much BW love, I expect you guys to be blown away by Mouse Guard as you get opportunities to play it. I think it's Luke's best game, and it is one of a very short list of games that I run without making any changes at all. I see it as a culmination of BW, BW Revised and Burning Empires. Whereas BW takes multiple sessions to really get a handle on, and months to get through all if it's intricacies and sub-systems (in my limited experience) MG took me one solid read-through before I got it, and then one session before the players understood almost all of the game.

Enjoy.
