The “secrets” thing sounds VERY familiar.

I brought this up previously in the forums, where a couple of kind folks pointed out a similarity to the buyoff mechanic in The Shadow of Yesterday and Lady Blackbird.
I didn’t cop it from anywhere, but it’s definitely not original. I suspect there are mechanics like it in some parlor games and new-wave boardgames.
Even with its potential for expanded player authorship, its primary use for my group right now is generating a more potent dramatic charge between my players and NPC’s.

Hey, thanks for the mention! Yeah, I very rarely use published adventures for the reasons you mention. I just love when we create our own stories instead. Usually the only time I run something published is when I’m judging for the RPGA or an off-night for our group.
