TPC 134: Doctor Exponent

April 3rd, 2011 · David · 3 Comments

* Paul and David start by talking about frustration in games, the article Paul makes allusions to is here:

* Paul moves on to Reddit RPG stories

* Sucker Punch is great – ignore the reviewers

* Random assorted clips from the recording

* The setup, and then we stop and talk about Fringe

* Eric regales us with Fear the Con stories

* Luke shows up to open his mystical gaming sack and breathe into the microphone – he adds very little else to the episode

* Paul talks about manipulating mechanics to hug the fiction, but it’s pretty much all Conflict and Burning Wheel

* Eric and Paul are talking about FATE and Dresden Files now

There are pretty regular discussions on Boardgamegeek about the nature of Ameritrash and the whole Eurogame vs. Ameritrash thing. I think the generally accepted concept of Ameritrash is a game that has qualities similar to Risk: conquest, player elimination, significant randomness, direct conflict, and simple goals. I would consider Risk the archetypal Ameritrash game. Another way to think about it might be: Ameritrash focuses on destruction or conquest, Eurogames focus on construction.

Thanks for mentioning /rpg on reddit. I’ve been lurking on reddit for about a month now and had seen a few people mention “subreddits” but I had no idea what they were talking about. I decided to poke around a little this morning and found /rpg and a handful of other subs to subscribe to.

Nice Strong Sad, Luke. I sure miss that stuff… they haven’t hardly updated for a couple years. I wish Eric hadn’t torpedoed
